Capacity Enhancement through Exposure Visit: Learning from Model Coffee Practices

 

Introduction:
An exposure visit was organized for coffee farmers under the PESHA Project (Project for Empowering the Small Holder Farmers Action). The purpose of the visit was to enhance the capacity of farmers engaged in coffee farming. The farmers themselves managed the travel expenses for the visit through savings from their monthly group meeting transportation budget.

Date of Visit: May 24, 2025
Number of Participants: 9 (2 women, 7 men)
Visit Locations:

  • Gandaki Rural Municipality Ward No. 2, Kuwapani and Patishwara
  • Gandaki Rural Municipality, Ward No. 3, Phujel
  • MPMT Office

Objectives of the Visit:

  • Exchange of learning among farmers.
  • Observe and learn from the good practices implemented by the project in the community.

Key Areas of Observation:

  • Nursery managed under the PESHA Project.
  • Pulper Center operated by Srijanshil Coffee Producers Cooperative, Gandaki RM-2, Kuwapani
  • Coffee farm of farmer Ram Prasad Dahal under the Jalkanya Coffee Producers Group in Gandaki RM-3, Phujel
  • Coffee farm of Bikash Gurung in Gandaki RM-2, Patishwara

Learnings:

  • Gained skills on coffee nursery management techniques
  • Learned about coffee processing methods.
  • Acquired knowledge on coffee orchard management, especially three-tier (multi-layer) farming system.
  • Learned about compost and irrigation management.
  • Received information on the services and facilities provided by the PESHA Project.
  • Conducting group meetings in the field during observation visits was found to be motivating.

Conclusion:
It is expected that coffee farmers will enhance their capabilities through exposure to model farms and project activities managed by themselves. The exchange of learning will support the practical application of new skills and technologies learned during the visit.
